Think George Washington and the time when he admitted to his father that he had cut down the cherry tree and famously is reported to have said “I cannot tell a lie, I did chop down the cherry tree.” Now, think Young, cherry capital of Australia and how the cherry trees on this farm near Young were chopped down for the vineyard to be planted … perhaps a tenuous link, but hey.
So was born a new wine brand called I Cannot Tell a Lie.
Xanthe Freeman was indeed born in that same USA that the name heralds from, where her family lived whilst her father studied at Davis University, California for his Doctorate in Viticulture. The family moved back to Wagga, Australia where her father lectured at Charles Sturt University in Viticulture. Xanthe holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Oenology) from Charles Sturt University and is the winemaker/vineyard manager of the duo behind I Cannot Tell a Lie.
Will Sneddon hails from the Hunter Valley where he lived at Allandale Winery, the son of winemaker Bill Sneddon. Although working in the winery and the vineyard since he was ‘knee high to a grass hopper,’ he escaped to study for a Bachelor of Design (Architecture), only to be drawn back to the ‘bright lights’ of farming and the wine industry in the Hilltops region. Will claims to be the tractor driver, harvester driver, cellar hand and general ‘dogs body’ … quickly to roll in to salesman and marketing behind the brand.
Currently all the wines we have available are reds, made from French varietals, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. All the grapes were sourced from the Hilltops vineyard region of NSW.
Don’t over think the wine, just drink it. If you like it then drink more. If you don’t like it, drink something else. It is what it is.
The worst bottle of wine with friends is better than a great bottle of wine with dilettantes or snobs. Extensive descriptive grammar doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about. Money doesn’t buy culture or taste.
Start with low expectations, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised. Decant if you want, drink out of a fancy glass if you want, drink out of a shoe if you want.
Always make the best of a bad situation.
